Dr. Cristian Ernesto Medina Sandino
Dr. Cristian Ernesto Medina Sandino. Nicaragüense. Licenciatura en Química de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua. Doctorado en Ciencias Naturales de la Universidad Georg-August, Göttingen, Alemania. Estudios de posdoctorado en Instituo Karolinska de Suecia y en Universidad de León, España. Áreas de interés científico: Química de Productos Naturales, Estructura de polisacáridos, Inmunoquímica. Rector (1994-2006) de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua, León (UNAN-León).
Presidente del Consejo Superior Universitario Centroamericano (2003-2004), Presidente del Consejo Nacional de Universidades de Nicaragua (1994-1996). Miembro del Consejo Asesor de Investigación en Salud de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (2006-2012), Miembro del Consejo de Fiduciarios de la Fundación Internacional para la Ciencia (IFS, 2004-2011), Miembro del Consejo Directivo del Consejo de Investigación en Salud para el Desarrollo (COHRED, 2004-2010). Desde junio 2007, Rector de la Universidad Americana (UAM) en Managua y miembro del Consejo Directivo del Consejo Nacional de Rectores de Nicaragua. Actualmente es Presidente del Foro Educativo Nicaragüense Eduquemos y Vicepresidente de Casa Alianza Nicaragua. Miembro Fundador de la Academia de ciencias de Nicaragua.
Dr. Ernesto Medina was born in 1952 in León, Nicaragua. He has a Bachelor Degree in Chemistry from the National University of Nicaragua and a PhD Degree in Chemistry from the Georg-August University of Göttingen in Germany. He did Post-Doctoral studies in Biotechnology and Molecular Biology at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden and at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of León in Spain. Dr. Medina has acted as visiting lecturer and researcher in different Universities in Europe and Latin America. His research interests are isolation and structure elucidation of natural products from tropical plants and study of Polysaccharides from bacteria cell walls. He is also interested on Education policies and the role of Science and Technology in Developing Countries.
Dr. Medina was Professor of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry at the National University of Nicaragua, where he served in different academic positions until being elected Rector in 1994 and served in this position until 2006. Since June 2007, Dr. Medina is Rector of the Universidad Americana (UAM) in Managua.
Dr. Medina was member of the National Council for Social and Economic Planning of Nicaragua, he has also been member of different advisory councils for local and regional governments in Nicaragua; is also member of the Board of several national and international nongovernmental organizations.
Dr. Medina was member of the Board and Vice Chair of the Council for Health Research for Development. Was member of the Board of Trustees of the International Foundations for Science and between 2004 and 2010 was member of the Advisory Council for Health Research of the Pan American Health Organization. Dr. Medina is founder and member of the Board of the Nicaraguan Academy of Science. Currently he is President of the Nicaraguan Education Forum EDUQUEMOS, and is also member of the Board of the Nicaraguan chapter of Covenant House.
